Kia Corporation, in partnership with The Ocean Cleanup, is celebrating a significant achievement in their ongoing mission to reduce plastic pollution in the world’s oceans. The Ocean Cleanup’s latest vessel, System 03, has returned to the port of San Francisco, where its predecessor, System 001, embarked on its inaugural journey six years ago. This voyage marks a significant step forward in the collective effort to address the growing plastic problem in our oceans.

Since the start of their collaboration in 2022, Kia’s support has enabled The Ocean Cleanup to remove over one million pounds of plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP)—the largest concentration of floating plastic waste in the world, covering an estimated 1.6 million square kilometers.

The Ocean Cleanup recently revealed an ambitious plan to further accelerate its efforts in cleaning the GPGP. Thanks to advances in technology and data collected during recent operations, the organization believes it can clean the entire GPGP within 10 years. However, they are setting an even more aggressive goal, aiming to reduce that timeline to just five years.

Charles Ryu, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Brand & CX at Kia, expressed his appreciation for The Ocean Cleanup’s efforts, stating: “Kia congratulates The Ocean Cleanup for their remarkable progress in tackling plastic pollution in the GPGP. We are proud to be a key partner in this important mission and are excited to see how further advancements in technology and operations will shorten the cleanup timeline.”

Looking ahead to 2025, The Ocean Cleanup plans to launch a new initiative focused on “hotspot hunting,” which will map out areas with the highest concentration of plastic in the GPGP. This strategic mapping is expected to significantly enhance the effectiveness of future cleanup operations.

Boyan Slat, Founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, emphasized the importance of partnerships in achieving their mission. “As an international non-profit, our success depends on the strength of our partnerships. Our collaboration with Kia has set a new standard for how organizations can create meaningful change. Together, we’re demonstrating that innovation and commitment can make a tangible difference in cleaning our oceans and inspiring others to join the effort. The products born from this partnership will stand as symbols of our shared success and the real impact of sustainable solutions.”

Over the past two and a half years, Kia and The Ocean Cleanup have worked closely to address the problem of plastic pollution. Since its inception, The Ocean Cleanup has completed 23 operational trips and more than 100 plastic extraction missions, removing over a million pounds of trash from the ocean—about 0.5% of the total plastic waste floating in the GPGP.

As part of their joint vision for a circular resource system, Kia and The Ocean Cleanup are exploring ways to transform ocean plastic into durable, practical products. The first result of this initiative will be a car accessory for the Kia EV3, set to launch in the fourth quarter of this year.

In addition to these efforts, Kia has been incorporating other recycled plastics and eco-friendly materials into its vehicle designs. For example, the all-electric flagship SUV, the EV9, features recycled fishing nets in its interior carpets and recycled plastic bottles in its seat fabrics. Similarly, the EV6 uses cloth and matting made from recycled plastics.

As part of its long-term sustainability strategy, Kia is aiming to have 20% of the plastics used in its vehicles come from recycled sources by 2030, reinforcing its commitment to becoming a leader in sustainable mobility.
