Necessary Fluid Inspections
Fluid levels, such as engine oil, engine coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid and washer fluid should be checked on a regular basis, with the exact interval depending on the fluid. Kia Engine Oil Maintenance
When checking your vehicles engine oil level:
- Be sure the vehicle is on level ground.
- Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature.
- Turn the engine off and wait for a few minutes (about 5 minutes) for the oil to return to the oil pan.
- Pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean and reinsert it fully.
- Pull the dipstick out again and check the level. The level should be between F and L.
If it is near or at L (low), add enough oil to bring the level to F (full). Do not overfill. Use a funnel to help prevent oil from being spilled on engine components.
Always be sure to clean the area around any filler plug, drain plug or dipstick before checking or draining any lubricant. Cleaning the plug and dipstick areas will prevent dirt and grit from entering the engine and other mechanisms that could be damaged. Recommended SAE viscosity number
Engine oil viscosity (thickness) has an effect on fuel economy and cold-weather operating (engine start and engine oil flowability). Lower viscosity engine oils can provide better fuel economy and cold weather performance; however, higher viscosity engine oils are required for satisfactory lubrication in hot weather. In some climates, it is recommended that a lower viscosity “winter weight” oil be used during cold weather. If you aren’t sure what weight oil you should use, consult the Ferguson Kia service team. Engine oil pressure warning light
The oil pressure warning light comes on whenever there is insufficient oil pressure. In normal operation, it should come on when the ignition switch is turned on, then go out when the engine is started. If the oil pressure warning light stays on while the engine is running, there is a serious malfunction.
This warning light indicates the engine oil pressure is low. If the warning light illuminates while driving:
- Drive safely to the side of the road and stop.
- Turn off the engine and check the oil level. If the oil level is low, fill the engine oil to the proper level.
- Start the engine again. If the warning light stays on after the engine is started, turn the engine off immediately. In this case, contact Ferguson Kia and have one of our certified Kia technicians inspect your vehicle.
